Morefood order
With support of like-minded people, the establishment of the Clara Non-profit DIY project went well and quick enough, we received the very first challenging order. Among our yarn product offered including decoration objects and clothing for both adults and kids, Shanghai Morefood E-commerce Co.,Ltd, a company that is keen on fulfilling its social responsibility chose to order 20 hats for their 8 different clients with clients’ logos — they actually placed order for 100 but we were not in a position to take it due to limited volunteers we had at the initial phase of the project, we committed to 20 only.
How they were made
In the afternoon of Sunday Jan 14, volunteers from different countries, different professions and different backgrounds that heard about the project through various channels gathered together for the very first time in the cafe of Shanghai Old Camera Museum, to work on these hats. Most volunteers are knitters and crocheters, some are not, but they are willing to help, they managed to make pompoms for all the lady hats which give the hats very cute look!
What’s worth mentioning is The Shanghai Purls knitters group which gathers many very experienced knitters and crocheters, mainly foreigners working and living in Shanghai. As the project is brand new we yet to have enough knitter & crocheter volunteers that could work on the order. After they heard about our project and ongoing order, they happily came to support us, which made the delivery of the order possible. To express sincere appreciation for their prompt support, the donation with the fund raised from this order to The Children’s Hope Foundation to support 2 children for 1 year is made under the name of both organizations.
These hats are made with yarn donated by the factory mentioned above, and logos with fabrics that I got in the SwapNotshop party (WeChat ID: SwapNotShop, a platform to encourage swapping within community) together with felt I bought — due to the tight deadline I didn’t manage to find a source of donated felt. Using felt bought is not really in line with the principle of the project which aims to maximize use of disused resources. After all the logos were made, a friend asked me if I am interested to take a big bunch of felt of all kinds of color that she doesn’t need anymore — it seems my efforts for searching disused resources is far from being satisfactory, and I need to do more effort.
Shoot the hats
We organized a photo shooting session to showcase products of the project and also to record the achievement of the team. 14 volunteers from 5 different countries gatherred on Jan 21 in Xintiandi and Ferguson lane to shoot photos for the hats made with all the efforts of volunteers. They worked very well together as a team although they are all strangers to each other. The few hours spent together were full of happiness and laughters. Although they are not professionals in what they do but they did a wonderful job that goes really beyond my expectation! All the small decoration items used for shooting hats were either collected from SwapNotShop party, or DIY items I made with yarn and “waste” from daily life, or things I got through exchange against my DIY items, all from existing resources!
Special thanks go to our volunteer photographers: Wei ZENG(China), Akshat (India) and Thorben (Germany), who spent 6 hours in the freezing cold of January and gave models such a pleasant and unforgatable experience, and more importantly, fantastic photos to memorize the great work of our DIY volunteers!
